Regulatory changes in the Brazilian energy sector: Supported by ANEEL, Laws are being drafted in the Brazilian Congress that will allow electricity consumers, regardless of the volume they consume, to choose their suppliers. Just as they do with cellular operators.
However, this is not expected to happen before 2030.
Unfortunately, direct energy trading between residential and commercial PV producers (common in Austria and some other countries in EU) is not even being considered.
There are currently 72.7 million electricity consumer units in Brazil, 84.6% of which are residential and the rest industrial, commercial, public authorities and services.
The regulatory changes in the Brazilian energy sector must be seen as just the beginning. Compared to Europe, there is a huge gap in the regulatory structure and technological lag that holds back billion-dollar deals for the country's economy, unfortunately.
