If such change, transfom the company's organization from selling-box to selling-service, becomes absolutely necessary due to competitive market pressures, it can determine a company's long-term survival.
Many software startups in Europe have established a foothold for manufacturers in the energy sector with SasS services, using their products as simple gateways or pipelines for data. It's best not to underestimate them... I've seen this movie before in the cellular communications industry.
