Energy on the move

Have you ever thought that one single word represents more than half of the whole energy consumed on Earth? Its concept has triggered almost all key science discoveries in the last 150 years: transportation.

According to EIA (US Energy Information Administration) this gets easier to be understood if we take into account a holistic vision. Consider the 2 transit modes:

1) physical (people/goods)

2) non-physical (information/ideas).

Mankind spent thousands of years relying on animals and the mother nature to perform both. Only after the Industrial Revolution did things start to change radically. The first mode created the industries of railway, automobile, aviation, powerboat. Likewise, the second one came up with morse code, radio, cinema, telephone, television and data networks (internet). Not to mention the indirect industries of equipment production and service providers.

What do these industries have in common beyond the carrying aspect? A huge need of power consumption heavily based on non-renewable resources such as coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear and hydro. For instance, consider the Telecom Operators: base stations and switching centers within mobile can consume between 60 to 85 percent of an carrier’s network energy (most of it with cooling). Needless to say that an alignment among energy efficiency, market competitiveness and green sustainability have been on the move for a while.

We have seen tech companies such as Intel, Microsoft, Apple, IBM, Google, among many others, either deploying their own non-fossil power plants or making part of green power partnerships (solar, wind, bios, thermal).

The future looks bright for those companies committed with green power generation and products related. The road is already out there. Simply replace the petroleum color tarmac by the green sustainability carpet.
