Data Centers - energy eaters!

We live in a digital world! So far, nothing new.

But in terms of energy, this means a big change.

Currently, the three main sectors of the global economy with high intense energy demands correspond to, in order: heavy industry/manufacturers, transportation and data centers. But this order is about to be reversed very soon.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers electricity use is expected to increase enourmously by 2026 compared to 2022. It projects that data centers and IT infrastructure will expand energy demand from 460TWh in 2022 to more than 3,000TWh in 2026, in the worst case scenario.

The rise of power-intensive workloads such as AI and cryptocurrency are the main actors responsbile for this extreme growing demand. Not forgetting the constant technological advances in the telecommunications sector such as cellular infrastructure with 5G and its successors.

This represents a huge challenge for the energy transition as Data Centers as energy eaters are highly sensitive to affordability, immediate availability and security.

It's definitely not an easy task, but... Energy companies and mobile service providers must be meticulously careful to devise an impeccable long-term strategy to deal with this growing scenario, taking sustainability and profitability into account.
