There was a time when I was chosen by companies... and I felt fortunate and flattered by that. After spending many pairs of shoes on the corporate road, I became extremely selective before joining an organization.
You know the end of that job interview when they ask you: do you have questions for me? I've always answered: yes, just one... What is your organization's BHAG? I usually hear back... B what??
BHAG, or Big Hairy Audacious Goal, is a term coined by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in their book "Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies." It is a long-term, overarching goal that is both inspiring and challenging, giving a striking and motivating vision for where an organization wants to go.
On the other hand, IKIGAI is a Japanese concept that involves four elements: what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. It provides a discovering purpose and fulfillment in life, by harmonizing passion, vocation, mission, and profession.
Once I know the company's BHAG, then I can confront it with my own BHAG and IKIGAI to see if there's a perfect alignment.
Together, BHAG & IKIGAI create a powerful and meaningful framework for personal and organizational growth.
So, if you can align these two elements you won't need to work anymore in life.
